It’s always good being paid to do the right thing. Thames Water are looking to do just that, through offering payments of 5p per litre saved through water efficiency measures. Incentivising water retailers to reduce your water consumption is fantastic, and in order to be eligible you simply need to be in the Thames Water Wholesale area (using Thames Water prior to April 2017), and have a non-domestic supply.

Thames Water have suggested that the average school can save 6,000 litres of water daily through quick fixes, such as urinal controls and fixing leaky taps and toilets, resulting in a one off £300 payment to their retailer. This payment is crucial in readdressing the financial balance to encourage retailers to focus on water efficiency.

Significantly, customers stand to gain even more from this incentive, with a 6,000 litre reduction in daily water use saving the customer in the Thames region £4,600 per annum, making the £300 Thames Water payment to the retailer a mere drop in the ocean. This highlights just one reason to consider the geographic region of sites when procuring your retailer. Doing so allows innovative contracts to be made which will incentivise retailers to help customers to achieve huge savings in their water consumption and spend. It is unlikely that an off the shelf national e-auction would allow the regional complexity of added value services to be properly considered.

In recent months, LASER Energy's customers are recognising the savings which can be made through mini-tenders focussed on water efficiency. This has included:

  • One customer rolling out free AMR across their entire portfolio, whilst still achieving a saving over default tariffs.
  • Another customer has built the cost of LASER’s Water Bureau service into their water charges, allowing their billing to be validated, monitored and reported, whilst again achieving a saving over default tariffs.

In the Water industry, knowledge is power, with figures already revealing great savings, administration improvements, better contract terms and improved water efficiency.
