On Wednesday 2nd July we were thrilled to head over to the University of Greenwich, Medway campus to take part in The Green STEM Showcase launched by Social Enterprise Kent (SEK).
SEK have already been running their successful and localised Green School Awards event for a number of years, and while this celebrates the fantastic efforts students are already doing in their schools on their pathway to a sustainable future, SEK wanted to offer something more – something bigger, that would engage larger groups of students in a more meaningful and hands-on way.
This fantastic event, sponsored by one of our energy suppliers, TotalEnergies, enables students to participate in interactive activities that not only spark curiosity but also inspire actions students can take back to their schools and homes. Featuring a host of energy and sustainability-focused organisations from Let’s Go Zero, to South Eastern Railway and the Environmental Agency, plus more.
I was absolutely delighted with how well the Green STEM Showcase went and how positively it was received. Schools were highly complementary about the event, praising the range of activities and experiences offered to their students. It was a joy to watch young people engaging with industry professionals and enjoying their time at the University of Greenwich campus. I am confident that the event provided new knowledge, inspiration, and aspirations for all who attended.

It was also a great opportunity to showcase to students the potential careers that could be available post-education and to inspire those conversations with fellow exhibitors like MKC Training.
SEK designs its programmes and events to welcome young people of all ages, as it believes the integration and communication across age groups enhances inspiration and learning. The Showcase achieved this, and it was great to see students attend from primaries, secondaries, and universities.
I was thrilled with the success of the Green STEM Showcase and the positive response it received from both exhibitors and our teachers that attended. The feedback from schools was particularly encouraging, as they spoke very highly of the variety of hands-on activities and learning opportunities available to their students. It was wonderful to see young people connecting with professionals from across the industry while enjoying the atmosphere of the University of Greenwich campus. I’m very confident the event offered valuable learning, sparked new ideas among all attendees, and inspired future ambitions for everyone involved on the day.

Kathleen Reid, Energy Procurement Manager, and Sue Horne, LASER’s Education Account Manager, proudly represented LASER at the event with an interactive stand designed to spark curiosity about solar energy. Packed with quizzes and a solar detective hunt, the stand offered a fun and educational experience for students of all ages. The response was overwhelmingly positive; pupils, teachers, and headteachers alike were eager to get involved.
One particularly memorable moment was when a primary school student chose to tackle the secondary-level quiz just for the challenge. What a fantastic display of enthusiasm! We were especially touched when a student told us our stand was their favourite because it let them test their knowledge in such an engaging way.
We also ran a competition off our quiz entries where students had the opportunity to win an Eco Bot (Solar Powered Robot Build Kit) and we are thrilled to announce the winning students were from Kingfisher Primary and Luton Primary. Sue will be visiting the schools shortly to deliver their prizes! Congratulations to our winners.
This event marked another meaningful collaboration with TotalEnergies as part of our ongoing Social Value mission. It was a privilege to support the Green STEM Showcase and contribute to inspiring the next generation of environmentally conscious learners.
We had chosen this workshop as one of the new projects being sponsored by TotalEnergies as part of their social value offering and they provided some great activities for the students. I really enjoyed the Green STEM workshop. The children engaged brilliantly throughout, and the event was well organised in a way that truly encouraged participation and curiosity. A fantastic experience all around!
