Apprentices are hired to learn a trade from a skilled employer at introductory level. Hiring an apprentice is a great way of not only teaching new skills but encouraging people to experience different working environments, which could hopefully lead to an offer of employment and career development.

Back in October, we decided to support Apprenticeships by looking for two individuals to join our growing teams. We take opportunity and development very seriously for our staff here so hiring apprentices was the perfect way to provide that for school leavers.

In two special posts this week we are catching up with our apprentices, Becky and Charlotte to find out how they have felt during their apprenticeship and what they have learnt in the process.

Charlotte’s Story

Age: 19

“Before working for LASER I was in sixth form studying sociology, health and social care and biology for two years whilst earning money waitressing at the weekend. During my time in sixth form we were signed up to Kent Training and Apprenticeships website where a designated person will email you personally when they have found apprenticeships that suit what you are interested in. I received a call about the LASER apprenticeship program and got the job a week after my interview. I think getting an apprenticeship is good because it not only gives you the experience of work, but also allows you to add another qualification to your CV which can open a lot of doors for you.”

When did you join LASER as an apprentice?

I joined LASER on 31st October 2016.

What’s your role at LASER?

My role at LASER is a Customer Relationships Adviser.

How have you found the experience of working for LASER so far?

I found the experience of working for LASER very exciting as I am learning new things every day. The energy market is so interesting and there is so much to learn which makes every day different.

What have been your challenges, and how have you overcome them?

Some of the customer’s queries have been challenging as there are sometimes issues that we need to chase with suppliers. I overcome this by making sure that there is a way that the query can be solved and ensuring that the customer is always fully satisfied in the help they are receiving.

What have you learnt during your time at LASER?

During my time at LASER I have learnt so much about the energy market and how many different factors can affect the pricing of electricity and gas. However I have also learnt a lot about the way that I work. I have found that I work well in a team and I like to help others in the tasks and deadlines that are set. I also work well independently when I am given my own tasks and deadlines to complete. This has been recognised by my colleagues.

Would you recommend others do an apprenticeship?

I would recommend others to do an apprenticeship because it not only helps you become more independent and learn how to manage your own finances, but also allows you to learn new skills and complete a qualification that can help you in the future.
